Sasssquatch N' Friends: Misha

Sasssquatch N' Friends
Mishap

I've known Misha for quite sometime now, ever since she began working with my sister Devon. When I first met her, she appeared straight out of a Miyazaki Film, with her big eyes and oodles of freckles, she was soft spoken like a tiny mouse, but she is far from that. Talking with Misha is an experience all within its own, every time we speak I learn something new about her, something that inspires her and she is just a soda pop can full of bubbles and excitement its contagious! When I saw her work for the first time I can honestly say that it is her personality manifested in the form of clothing to wear, and I most certainly dig it.

Dear Pussycats, I'd like to introduce you to my dear friend, Misha

Name: Misha
Age: 23

Favorite Color: Pastel anything
Describe your style in one sentence: The girl with an old soul and a young heart
What do you do: Make clothes
Main fashion influence: History- I'm obsessed with the sixties and twenties. Music- I always have a soundtrack to every collection. Strong women-I always have a muse
Tiny things that make you happy: Eskimo kisses, vinyl, my boyfriend's french toast, whiskey sodas and weekends.

Favorite place in the whole wide world: My pink room! It's my private sanctuary/sewing laboratory.

Favorite sweet treat: dark chocolate anything!

Favorite Childhood book: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. When I was very little, I didn't fully understand the depth of the story, but it fascinated me. I still adore the book as an adult.
Where was your best job: Now that I'm jumping to launching my line...this is it, right meow!
Favorite form of communication: Face to face preferred... I'm terrible on the telephone, yet I don't mind texting.
Favorite albums of all time: Too many to list. One is definitely "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"- Neutral Milk Hotel
Favorite Films: The Sound of Music, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Breakfast at Tiffany's.
What do you look for when shopping for fabrics: The right hand and feel, and an interesting print.
Favorite items of these categories:

Something old
: Photos! I love to use disposable cameras and then wait to develop them much later. They're like mini time capsules
Something new: Music. I'm always on the prowl for new tunes.

Something borrowed: My mom's jewelry
Something blue: Hydrangea bushes at my aunt's house on Maui

If You Could Animorph Into Any Animal Which Would it be: a Pegasus

(although she makes quite the cute mouse)

Whats your Dream Job: Designing my own line and just traveling all over the place for new materials.

When did your love of fashion begin: Through drawing. Ever since my first crayon Sailor Moons, I was hooked. I wanted to be an illustrator, but then fell in love with the whole process of actually making everything myself.

What is your favorite clothing item that you've made so far:That's a hard one for me, because I feel like every collection is me at a certain time and place. When I was in school though, I shot a concept video for the "Alpine" dress I made as a part of my senior collection, "Alpine High Tea." I wrote the storyboard and collaborated with the amazing Anthony Vallejo-Sanderson. This dress has a special place in my heart.

(Work for a boutique in Waikiki)

What are some of your future projects: I want to start working on my next collection! I want to have Spring/Summer show and a Fall/Winter show every year.

Where do you shop and what do you look for: I'm a thrift store girl through and through. GoodWill, Salvation Army, it's all good. I love the hunt, especially for cashmere and silk.
Where can we find you: mishaphonolulu.com! It's still in its blossoming stages, but it's terribly exciting to have my own website finally up and running. I also would love to consign to some local boutiques eventually.

(Also follow on instagram: @Mishappening)

Tell us about your most recent event: I showcased my Spring/Summer collection at the Mercury Bar. It was my first show post-school, so there were none of the luxuries I was used to; it was DIY all the way, but so much more rewarding because I really had to take responsibility

(Gals for Good was an event created by my sister Devon, where we raised funds for Planned Parenthood in the most darling fashion. There were a bunch of local female artists and of course a fashion show by MISHAP (featuring me as a model lol) and it was a good ole time.
We danced, we had fun and we raised $400!

and if you live in the Honolulu area, stay tuned for the next event!)

BACK TO THE INTERVIEW:
Tell us about your muse(s): My personal muse is Emily Sewell ;) but they always change every collection. S/S 2013 titled "Doo-a-run-run" is inspired by 60's girl groups and Ronnie Spector <3

How do you define sassy: Sassy is wit, charm and a sense of humor

I had the pleasure of shooting an entire lookbook for the Doo-Run-Run collection
I was gonna include it in this post but I think it deserves its own post.
here is a little teaser of what is to come
