How Rilo Kiley Saved My Life

How Rilo Kiley Saved My Life

Now, you all know, I'm very found of hyperbole, this, "WAS THE BEST SHOW EVER" or "I LOVE IT MORE THAN BEYONCE" (Which is saying something because she is my Queen). But when I say the band Rilo Kiley SAVED MY LIFE I don't dare kid. I'm not being dramatic or using capitalization for emphasis, EMPHASIS. In times of trouble or distress I've turned to this band an immeasurable amount for solace and inspiration.

When I got my wisdom teeth removed the fierce foursome were in the dentist chair with me, holding my hand and serenading me while I was shot with novocain and my big wisdoms were wiggled, waggled and eventually yanked out by two bros named Dr. Bryson and his assistant Dr. Tyson who kept fist pumping during my surgery. They were there for me. Every single time I go on a long arduous drive to Outer Mongolia in the rain, it's always in the rain, they guided my way with a lantern and a banjo. And yesterday morning as I was standing outside of my school parking building trying to get a parking pass at 4 in the morning and they were there for me again.

I can't quite explain exactly what their music does for me. I love Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett's vocals, they are calming yet beautifully unique, unique enough to not get sick of it easily. Their calm voices are mixed with fat bass lines and a funky grove that actually made me tap my foot, despite being freezing and soaked head to toe. They not only match my scared, tired, hungry and mood full of detest but they actually made me feel better and not so alone, while I wrapped myself up in my poncho and used a lighter to warm my hands (My heart has never gone out to homeless people more so than now). And after almost four hours of waiting I can honestly tell you that Rilo Kiley is not only the soundtrack to my life but is in fact the only thing made me happy, and at this point I'm gonna be so bold to say that each member is my best friend. Despite feeling cold and alone like an abandoned pup being chained outside while he presses his nose against the glass of the warm Italian restaurant where his owners are breaking breadsticks and shoving their pie holes full of spaghetti and discussing this weeks reality  television, and they didn't even leave me one of those cool dog jackets. Rilo Kiley is that cool pup that comes and rescues me and takes me for hotdogs and a whirl around the city like Oliver and Company. They make me so happy and make me feel like everything isn't so bad.

Every long drive, every sad day, every plane ride, every study session, every breakup, EVERY DAY, Rilo Kiley is there for you.

For a band named after a rugby player that appeared in a dream, seeing them live has also sadly become a dream, for they had broken up in 2011. With a tag on the toe that was Rilo Kiley, I'm left feeling a bit lonely, BUT to go full circle with this little story, whenever I'm feeling lonely, I have them after all.

And who knows if they will get back together!

When I'm feeling blue I'm must remember, I'm flawed if I'm not free, and that I simply must salute my shorts!
